Like fellow former Mickey Mouse clubber Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera kicks off her debut album with a teen-lust nugget--in this case, the No. 1 single "Genie in a Bottle"--that the rest of the disc can't possibly live up to. Aguilera has a strong voice, but patterns herself after iffy role models such as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. Aside from "Genie," most of this music is straight from the cookie cutter, like the less than successfully sultry "When You Put Your Hands on Me" and the Mulan ballad showpiece "Reflection." In chart terms, though, there'll be no stopping her--at least for a while. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Christina Aguilera. Third Copy of Album. All Three Copies Purchased Right Here On Amazon.   August 10, 2010
Magali
"Christina Aguilera" is very juvenile and very teen, but the rhythms and lyrics are very catchy and I can't stop lisening to it. My favorite tracks are "Genie In A Bottle", "What A Girl Wants", "I Turn To You", "So Emotional", "Come On Over (All I Want Is You"), "Reflection", "Love For All Seasons", "When You Put Your Hands On Me", "Blessed" and "Obvious", although I never skip a track. Obviously songs are all 10/10 for me. I was lucky that the last two copies I got of this album here on Amazon were the copies that contained the video versions of "What A Girl Wants" and "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)" because the first copy I got, two months after the album was released, in 1999, obviously contained the album versions and none of these videos had been released. I like this edition of the album better than the first one. Christina makes AWESOME music. Can't get enough of her music.

5 out of 5 stars Best Debut Album ever done.   August 9, 2010
Cassandra Lee (not telling.)
I got this album when it first came out , and to this day I still listen to it. Christina Aguilera I have to say , has the most talent and most soulful voice, unlike some other pop stars. She has already been around for 10 years, and I belive she will be around for a long long time.

Genie In A Bottle~This was the song that got me hooked onto Christina. It's so danceable, and so freaking sexy! While it did create some controversy, I personally think she did this song quite tastefully and not so tacky.

What A Girl Wants~ A fun mid tempo song. With a sweet message for the boyfriend. Defintly would play this song , when you want to show your boyfriend some apprication or love.

I Turn To You~ Writtne for her mother, Christina just wanted to say thank you to mom for being their. Really good song, with a really good meaning.

So Emotional~ Christina sings about a emotional rollercoster relationship. Very r & bish with a hint of jazzy blues.

Come On Over (All I want it you)~ Awesome dance song! That is really all I have to say.

Reflection~The first time when I heard this song, it made me cry. I could relate to it so much and so will many others. It's about how people expect us to be anyone except ourselfs. really powerful song.

Love For all Seasons~ Really cute/romantic song, She defintly shows a lot of soul in this song.

Somebody's Somebody~ This song is so cool. Really sexy beat, and christina hits some really good notes on this particular song.

When you Put Your Hands On Me~ Another song that is somewhat similer to Somebody's Somebody. Will make you think of all the feelings you have when your boyfriend/girlfriend is around.

Blessed~I believe this was another song written for her mom. Dedicate this song to someone who has stand by your side through the good and the bad.

Love Will Find a Way~ A bit retro feeling. Sort of sounds like 60's pop with a modern twist to it. Very cute song.

Obivous~This song really reminded me of Mirah Carrey and Whitney Houston. Powerful balled. I think alot of girls (and boys) have felt the emotion of losing control when your around the one you love, and your lover doesn't know it. Very sweet song.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Pop Album   July 16, 2010
Amanda L. Davis (Adrian,MI USA)
If you like pop then this album might be enjoyable. It is pure pop. I liked a lot of the songs though. Christina has a nice voice for someone her age and the majority of the songs are clean and non-trashy. The only thing that kept me from giving this a 5 is that "Come On Over" on the CD is not the same as the one played on the radio. It actually sounds strange on the CD because the words and music don't go well together.

4 out of 5 stars Beginnings of a pint-sized diva   May 17, 2010

For a 10 year old teen pop record, Christina's debut has aged pretty well. Some cheesy spots here and there, but surprisingly mature and catchy as ever. Blessed with Whitney's power, Mariah's airy notes, and a wide range, "the little girl with the big voice" blew fellow pop tarts Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, and Mandy Moore out of the water.

Genie In A Bottle was an obvious choice for a summer single with it's breezy synth and laidback approach. The lyrics are sexy, but tasteful. I won't type them since that song was played so often you can sing them in your sleep. What A Girl Wants is so catchy you can't get the chorus out of your head. You know you sing it! "What I want/Is what ya got/And what ya got/Is what I want!" The saucy Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You) gives Christina a chance to throw down and go crazy with the runs and melisma, but not in an over the top fashion. The lyrics are racier with Chrissy teasingly persuading her man to get it on with her, but nothing too explicit.

The Mulan single Reflection is a soaring self-esteem anthem and I Turn To You is a sentimental power ballad penned by Diane Warren. When You Put Your Hands on Me (the "talk box" wasn't necessary), Somebody's Somebody, and Love Will Find a Way are filler, but memorable. The sensual So Emotional and fluid Love For All Seasons are addictive and Blessed is a well sung ballad.

Christina's shining performance comes in the form of the closer Obvious. "Can you hear it in my voice?/Was it something I let slip?/Does the whole world know?/Isn't it obvious?/I'm the one who's in control/Now I'm acting like a fool/Do my feelings show?/Is my face aglow?/Isn't it obvious?/That I don't know what I'm doing anymore?/I'm feeling like a little girl/Caught up in emotions/I'm out of control/Isn't it obvious?" Her voice carries so much confusion and sorrow that previews the aura around her next album Stripped.

The best thing about her debut is Christina's vocals are restrained. She still hits her fair share of notes and belts and runs, but it's pleasing to the ear. Like the old adage says, less is more.

5 out of 5 stars How can you not love this?   December 6, 2009

Christina's stellar debut! Although I was not a fan of her hit "Genie In A Bottle," or "I Turn To You," I adored "What A Girl Wants," "Come On Over," "Reflection", and "Love Will Find A Way," and "Obvious." Although Britney is a a huge guilty pleasure of mine, Christina definatly had the better debut album. (I also liked this much better than "Stripped.") I would call this perfect pop.
