Product Description Contains five ealing studios classics - kind hearts & coronets ladykillers man in the white suit & lavender hill mob. Plus box has captains paradise exclusively. Studio: Starz/sphe Release Date: 11/11/2008 Run time: 451 minutes
Amazon.com Five of the British film industry's best-loved comedies in one boxed set makes The Alec Guinness Collection absolutely essential for anyone who has any passion at all for movies. It contains Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), The Man in the White Suit (1951), The Captain's Paradise (1953) (only available in this set), and The Ladykillers (1955). The Ealing Studio's greatest comedies captured the essence of post-war Britain, both in their evocation of a land once blighted by war but now rising doggedly and optimistically again from the ashes, and in their mordant yet graceful humor. They portray a country with an antiquated class system whose crumbling conventions are being undermined by a new spirit of individual opportunism. In the delightfully wicked Kind Hearts and Coronets, a serial killer politely murders his way into the peerage; in The Lavender Hill Mob a put-upon bank clerk schemes to rob his employers; The Man in the White Suit is a harshly satirical depiction of idealism crushed by the status quo; in The Captain's Paradise, a ferryboat captain complements his proper British wife with a fiery Spanish wife; while The Ladykillers mocks both the criminals and the authorities with its unlikely octogenarian heroine Mrs. "lop-sided" Wilberforce. Many factors contribute to these films' success--including fine music scores from composers such as Benjamin Frankel (Man in the White Suit), Malcolm Arnold (Captain's Paradise), and Tristram Cary (The Ladykillers); positively symphonic sound effects (White Suit); marvelously evocative locations (the environs of King's Cross in Ladykillers, for example); and writing that always displays Ealing's unique perspective on British social mores ("All the exuberance of Chaucer without, happily, any of the concomitant crudities of his period")--yet arguably their greatest asset is Alec Guinness, whose multifaceted performances are the keystone upon which Ealing built its biting, often macabre, yet always elegant comedy. --Mark Walker

Guinness Was Great February 20, 2010 Jan J. Losi 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased this product because it contained 5 dvds - 4 of which are my favorite 1940s & '50s "Ealing Comedy" movies starring Alec Guinness: "Kind Hearts & Coronets", "The Lavender Hill Mob", "The Man in the White Suit", and "The Ladykillers". (While "The Captain's Paradise" is a nice "extra", its not on the same level as the others.) Quite frankly, I also purchased this package because it was far cheaper than other such compilations, or than buying these dvds separately. (For example, the Criterion dvd of "Kind Hearts & Coronets" sells for roughly the same price as this ENTIRE set.)
I am very pleased with the product. While it would have been nice to have each dvd boxed separately, as was done previously, the movies more than make up for that. If you are not yet an Alec Guinness fan, or think of him ONLY in terms of his work in "Star Wars", these wonderfully written, directed & filmed movies will show you the full range of Sir Alec's great comedic acting talents. Plus, he is joined by some other noteworthy Brit actors: droll Dennis Price in "Kind Hearts & Coronets", pre-My Fair Lady Stanley Holloway in "The Lavender Hill Mob" beautiful, husky-voiced Joan Greenwood in "The Man in the White Suit", and even a very young Peter Sellers in "The Ladykillers".
So, I highly recommend this set!
Great films by great actor October 4, 2009 G. Kaldis (NY) I saw these when I was a child. each bears watching and re-watching. They are an addition to any DVD library.
Charmer April 17, 2009 J. Heminway Guinness was such a protean artist. I thought I knew lots about his career but was continuously surprised by this collection.

Alec Guinness Collection (Kind Hearts and Coronets / The Lavender Hill Mob / The Man With the White Suit / The Captain's Paradise / The Ladykillers)
The early Alec Guinness films have become the standard by which all comedic films are measured. These films are classic for the era and remain popular a half century later. If you have just discoved this talented man then these are the films to add to your collection.
What is the purpose of this set? January 25, 2009 calvinnme (Fredericksburg, Va) 14 out of 16 found this review helpful
As another reviewer mentioned the exact same titles are in The Alec Guinness Collection (Kind Hearts and Coronets / The Lavender Hill Mob / The Ladykillers / The Man in the White Suit / The Captain's Paradise). Anchor Bay is the manufacturer of that set. I have it and the transfers are fine. Specifically the video looks very good and the sound I'd probably give a solid 4 out of 5. It's not as good as what most studios put out on restored films, but the audio is much better than typical public domain quality. Since used copies of that collection go for half of what this set retails for, I'd stick with the old reliable. If you're not familiar with what Alec Guinness could do with comedy material since most of his roles in American films were of a serious nature, these five films are very worth checking out.
