5 out of 5 stars Water-proof case that works to 30 meters   March 4, 2009
Petr Martin Janecek
Purchased the case for a diving trip. I used it for snorkeling and 14 dives in the Andeman sea, as deep as 29 meters, and it worked just as expected. No leaks, pictures came out good, and easy to operate the camera underwater. My only complaint is that the buttons are hard to see underwater, so memorize which one is macro and which one is flash before you enter the water. The flash diffuser worked very well, and most of my favorite pictures from the diving are taken with the flash.

5 out of 5 stars Great Underwater Photos   January 31, 2009

I wanted to take digital photos underwater, but didn't want to pay the price a housing costs for my Canon Rebel Xsi. I had this SD600 and found this housing at much less the price for the rebel housing. I got the Canon WP-DC4 housing and took it to Hawaii. I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality pictures I got. It takes some getting used to because you can not see the viewer very well and can't see what you got. So you have to aim by looking slightly over the top of the housing. It takes some practice, but it works well. A little practice before you go on that important dive is a must. Have a 2MB card so you can take lots of picture even of the same subject to make sure you get the picture you want. It was completely water tight. You will not have a problem if you read the manual first. I wish I could have had this a long time ago.

4 out of 5 stars so far so good   January 26, 2009

I received this case a week ago and read the manual immediately. Followed the instructions and so far so good. I have not really put it to the test yet (hence only 4 stars). But, so far it has performed flawlessly. I did the test with the case (without the camera) in a bucket of water...no leaks. I took it to a pool to use the video option with my kids....no leaks about 10 feet down. Video came out very clear. The sound is funny (entertaining). All camera buttons are just as easy to use in the case underwater. I am going to Cozumel scuba diving in a month and am excited to use it there! One issue i had but figured out with removing the o ring. Tip: Follow the directions, just pinch hard while doing it. I had problems at first but soon realized i wasnt using enough finger tip pressure. Once i did, the ring popped out no problem.

Just got back from the trip and the case worked perfectly. 6 dives to 80ft. Both stills and video worked well. The audio with the video is good too. I am glad i purchased it!!

2 out of 5 stars More about the camera than the case...   November 4, 2008

I bought this case for use on a recent scuba trip to the Great Barrier Reef. I had used the Canon S500 with Canon's case for that model in the past. Even though the SD600 is a newer camera, it did not perform as well as the older S500.

The main problem with the SD600 for underwater photography is its poor performance in low light. In low light, the SD600 will automatically engage its higher ISO settings even in "manual" mode, and the results are just way too noisy. Anything over ISO 250 is pretty much unusable. The S500 had a much more limited ISO range, so it would use other parameters to account for low light. For the S500, that might mean the shutter times were longer on average or that there was a heavier dependence on the flash, but the results were clearly better. I had a higher percentage of usable shots from the S500.

One option to deal with this is to put the SD600 in manual mode and set the ISO manually. Keep it at 250 or preferably lower if there's enough light. I wish I had done that instead of leaving it in "Auto ISO" mode, but I couldn't tell what pictures really looked like on the camera LCD. I didn't really see the quality of the shots until I got back on land and saw the pictures on a computer.

Another option... Perhaps pick up a camera that has better high ISO performance than the SD600 or a camera that gives more control over settings. This can be challenging with the point-and-shoot cameras these days as the producers seem to try to maximize ISO even if it means loss of quality.
