4 out of 5 stars Not the original, but quite good   July 19, 2010
David Masters (Wilton, NH)
Nobody, except maybe the developers, expects an expansion pack or sequel to be better than the original... in most cases, expansions fall far short of the original. "Extraction Point" is one of the exceptions.

"Extraction Point" begins where F.E.A.R. left off - you in the chopper with Jin and Holiday just as Alma climbs aboard. You thought you'd escaped when you survived that nuke explosion in Auburn, but guess what... that was just the beginning. Now you've got to survive long enough to escape intact.

It's not really any different than the original F.E.A.R. - it's still a very linear FPS, gunning down enemies in a somewhat supernatural environment. But they have added to it a bit - new enemies, new weapons and best of all, new environments. It's no longer just office / research lab / warehouse - all sorts of new backgrounds have been added, including city streets, underground tunnels, subways and even a church.

Most of the enemies are the same - your old friends the Replicas, and Armacham security dweebs. But there are new ones as well, including the near-invisible 'ghosts' in the tunnels with the glowing red eyes. (Yes, both versions of Alma make an appearance, as does the ghost of Paxton Fettel)
New weapons include the Minigun (shame there's so little ammo for it) and the Laser Carbine.

The "spooky factor" isn't as good - it's a little uneven throughout the game, though there are some points that'll give you a jolt. There are moments when everything is bland and boring (other than blowing away the enemy, of course), and other times when everything is getting thrown in your face, more like a slasher flick than anything else. You still have ghosts and precog moments to deal with, but they don't have quite the same kick as the original.

The same system that ran the original will handle the expansion equally well (as long as you had better than the minimum requirements). Graphics have been bumped up just a little, so you could get a better graphics board if you wanted, but it's not necessary. Because it's an expansion, it does require the full original game to be installed, but that shouldn't be a problem unless you have very limited hard drive space.

Pros: new environments, new weapons, new enemies. Slightly better graphics. Nice replay ability. Spooky atmosphere. Same basic play style.

Cons: it's still a linear FPS, point A to point B. The supernatural factor is uneven, and isn't as spooky as the original. Very little mystery. Shorter - and in some ways easier - than the original.

If you enjoyed the original, then by all means get the expansion - it's worth it, though you won't want to pay the original price; shop around. After you're done playing this, then you might want to check out F.E.A.R. Perseus Mandate as well. Fear 2: Project Origin on the other hand, is one I wouldn't recommend, if only because it has DRM.

5 out of 5 stars fear expansion pack   September 23, 2009
R. Cornell (Santa Barbara, CA United States)
I ordered the "Expansion Pack - Fear Extraction Point" thinking it was the whole game - what a surprise when I tried to install it and found I needed to have Fear installed first. To make a long story short, we bought the "gold edition Fear" locally and installed it. It includes Fear and the expansion pack mentioned above. Fear was a lot of fun and the additional game which is "Extraction Point" was a lot of fun too, althought short. I would recommend getting both games in one pack, as it is more cost effective.

5 out of 5 stars Great Expansion   February 13, 2009
Aaron Graf
I really loved the first F.E.A.R. and i finally played this expansion. If you loved the first F.E.A.R., then you would love this expansion. The levels are not as tedious and repeated as before and it has a heavy focus on the action aspects of the first game. Don't get me wrong though, it still has the "OH (%*$" moments. The story is not as heavy as the first but still good. There are a few new weapons like the chain gun, and laser gun and automated turrets that you can throw like a grenade and they will stick at any angle and help you lay waste to your enemies. It is also a decent length. Overall this is a excellent expansion and if you liked the first F.E.A.R., you have to play this game.

1 out of 5 stars Installs SecuROM on your computer   November 29, 2008

F.E.A.R installs SecuROM (version 7.27) on your computer. This is spyware that is -supposed- to stop piracy. Getting it off your computer is a major pain as it creates registry keys with weird null characters in them, and files that can't be easily deleted. I will Google SecuROM and the name of any game I buy from now on to make sure the lame DRM SecuROM isn't on anything else I buy. If you already have this game just try and delete the
SecuROM directory on your computer and see what happens.

5 out of 5 stars FEAR   September 30, 2008

Played well and the graphics were great. Did not require original game to load the newest addition.
