Product Description You Are Empty is a first-person shooter that takes you into an alternate-world USSR. In the late '50s, leading Soviet scientists created superhumans in the hopes of a brighter future for Russia and for communism. But tampering with Nature has its consequences -- the new supermen broke free and rampaged throughout the city, killing thousands. The few survivors mutated to face this deadly new threat; they are now the only inhabitants of these dark, deserted streets. You Are Empty immerses players in an exaggerated dark and obscure atmosphere of Soviet totalitarianism. Fighting against mutants created by the Soviet super soldier program, the players are tasked to figure out what happened in the city and stop the mutants from spreading further.

Nicely designed environment and decent game play February 13, 2009 David R. Krueger (Huntsville, AL United States) Taking price into consideration (I paid $20), I'd say this is an above average FPS. The story line is admittedly hard to follow until it comes together at the end, and even then is less than stunning, but the cinemas between levels were visually artistic and definitely a cut above the vast majority of games. I had no crashes or lockups with the game on my Vista x64 computer, but after first loading it, the picture got very shaky as soon as I got the first weapon (the wrench). The wrench was steady, but everything else was terribly shaky. That was fixed by updating my video driver. The only other graphic issue I had was when I was traveling on an elevator or train or other moving vehicle, the vehicle would flutter. The external scenery was find and the weapon I was holding was fine. Just the vehicle itself fluttered. I tried fooling around with video settings to get it to stop, but gave up pretty quickly. It didn't really interfere with the game because nothing much is happening when you're on a vehicle like that anyway. Aside from that the game ran smoothly with everything set to max. I have a 3GHz core 2 Intel cpu, 4GB ram, and dual Nvidia SLI-linked 8800GTS 512 GPUs. The mechanics of the game were good by my standards. You can manually save an unlimited number of times and there is also a quick save/load. The game autosaves at each level as well. Load times were about average. I played the normal difficulty level and found the game slightly on the easy side with plenty of health available. I recommend trying it at the hard level simply because the fact that you can save as often as you want makes it seem a bit too easy. The environment is what helps to make this game interesting. While not as detailed as some high end games, the creativity of the buildings, terrain, and props makes for an attractive setting. I noticed that when you bump into a car, it actually rocks a bit on its suspension. Weapons were fairly good. You start with a wrench and then, as the game progresses, you graduate through the pistol, shot gun, nail gun, rifle, scoped rifle, machine gun, etc. There are also Molotov cocktails. There is some kind of lightning gun that I didn't really care for, but then I never did read the manual about how to use it. I was probably just not using it right. Like the health, ammunition is plentiful. The bad guys were well styled. There was some variety, but there are no level bosses. The AI was decent in the sense that enemies did make some use of cover and did surprise me a number of times. I was a bit disappointed that the game didn't have a traditional ending. I was hoping for a finale. But that still didn't make me feel like the game was a bust. Being an FPS fan for years and having played a lot of them, I give this game a thumbs up (especially for the now lower cost).
Remarkably good, if you are into pure atmosphere December 16, 2008 Mark Lahren (Bismarck, North Dakota USA) Yes, I have read all the professional reviews on Metacritic that basically gave the middle finger to this game. But having played it to the end, I simply don't get the hate. It's not a perfect game, but clearly a lot of work and love went into creating it, so I think it deserves some comment. First, the positive. From the moment I was treated to the first cutscene, which like all the cutscenes, looks like it was created by the same guys who did Pink Floyd's "The Wall", I was impressed by the art design. Both the cutscenes and ingame art are quite striking and beautiful. Very atmospheric. I have no clue what the story is, but then again, I didn't understand "The Wall" either. I'm sure there is a deep story there, and I may play this again sometime, and pay more attention. Level design is overall good, with some caveats I'll get to in the 'negative' section. Some very creative minds here. Clearly inspired by "Half Life 2" in that these guys are just as good at creating stunning set pieces. Unfortunately, the look and atmosphere are where the great stuff ends. Weapons are decent, and the music does help set the tone. The music is used sparingly, which I liked. For once, I didn't immediately shut it off, and just left it on for the entire game. It's also a quite long game, at least for these days. Maybe 12 to 15 hours for me. And I was never bored. I was always very curious to see what was around the next corner...mostly. And here's where the negatives start. About two-thirds through the game, I started noticing a lot more crates than usual. And it got worse toward the end (though thankfully not at THE end). It was pretty obvious that they got rushed to get this game out the door, as there was pretty blatant use of crates as as means to guide you by using them as impromptu walls. This only happened on a few levels, but it was obvious and annoying to see. This is a shame, since the levels they were used in were otherwise quite nice. The game is very linear, which could have been alleviated by making a few more places to explore, and a few more secrets to find. While there are some secret areas, they are precious few. There is no "Run" key. You walk the same exact speed through the entire game. This was my biggest peeve. I got used to it, but it was annoying. I believe this was done intentionally, as a way to pace the game, but it was totally a mistake in my view. While I understand that the plot includes mutated creatures, I think the huge-breasted nurses and giant chickens only detract from the excellent mood they had already succeeded at. Yeah, that's a lot of negatives, but overall, the positives do outweigh them. But only if you're into playing primarily an atmospheric game. Other than that, the actual gamePLAY is average at best. But I'm into bleak cities and landscapes, so I really liked my playthrough. Your experience may vary. The game was stable, and ran just fine for me from beginning to end. I'm using Vista Premium 64-bit on a Q6600 and 9800GT.
But you ARE empty!!! October 15, 2008 jrt42 (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Yes you are empty very quickly, there are so many monsters around the corner you need to find some ammo fast.
AN EXCEPTIONAL GAME! June 27, 2008 Robert L Griffith (Westchester, CA USA) Someone has said that electronic gaming is the new art form. In my opinion, "You Are Empty" epitomizes this ideal. Mostly panned or damned with faint praise by its' critics, this is nevertheless an exceptional gaming experience, reminiscent of several top-drawer games such as Half-Life 2, F.E.A.R. and Iron Storm. A unique single-player FPS game for grown-ups that takes place in an atmospheric, post-apocalyptic Russia [by Russian developers], it has great graphics, exciting game-play and truly terrifying mutant enemy AI not seen elsewhere. Maps are large and detailed. Negatives are a lack of a run, lean or prone mode, hence the 4 stars. All-in-all though, this is an excellent game that you'll play again and again!
Not too good June 10, 2008 Matthew Gorman (Bernville, PA USA) This game has lots of problems. First of all it doesn't explain very well what's going on - note I don't have the manual because I bought it as a download (legal as the site I downloaded from was promoted on the official site for the game.) Things move very slowly - and a lot of the game is finding your way around rather than action - which is boring. The graphics also don't render very well - you can see right through the floor many places. The cutscenes also make no sense. A good idea and some fun, but they should have spent more time making sure things work right and on the translation for the US market.
