Killer Package! September 12, 2007 Patrick J. Campbell (NY) The definative Rainbow Album!
"Stargazer" is beyond words.
Killer package-actually comes in a full size album cover-killer sound.
Get it while you can!
ridin' the rainbow May 26, 2007 B. E Jackson (Pennsylvania) What the? I thought rainbows were supposed to be quiet beautiful things. Well according to this album, rainbows are WILD, HEAVY METAL things!
Whereas Rainbow's debut album was more about carrying on with the Machine Head-period of Deep Purple, the follow up is almost exactly the opposite- now we're walking dangerously close to heavy metal territory. It seems like every song is extemely fast, and much heavier now. Rainbow Rising doesn't feel like a classic rock/hard rock record- it feels like a straight up "take no bs" speed metal album.
That's pretty much the story for the entire thing. Was this the absolute high point for the band? Maybe, but I better check out some of the bands live work before carving my thoughts into stone. I know one thing, "Stargazer" may be the coolest rock song I've ever heard. The vocals from Dio really make it even better, the way he almost sounds like he's pleading for help at the end, and the overall magical journey aspect of the song... and the unusually chaotic production really makes this song a highlight, in my book.
The whole album is a winner, in fact. Get it now.
Best ALBUM EVER October 25, 2005 Stargazer (New York) This album is flawless! If you like anything Ronnie James Dio or Ritchie Blackmore than you'll love this album! It's the whole band at there peek and it became something very special!
1.Tarot Woman- 10/10 This song starts with a jaw dropping keyboard solo from Tony Carey. Than it leads into an awesome riff by Ritchie Blackmore that keeps getting louder and louder until the song explodes into an amazing fast epic power metal song. Ronnie's vocals are so powerful it sounds like the earth must be moving when he sings. Ritchie Blackmore's solo is so incredible and lyrical too. Ronnie sings with even more passion during the second half of the song and ends it with a long note hold and some more keyboards after that from Tony Carey. Rainbow's first fantasy song on this amazing Rising album.
2.Run With the Wolf- 10/10 One of my favorite all time songs. Ronnie's vocals are amazingly powerful once again! Ritchie's riff is incredible too and uses just the right amount of distortion too. Some brilliant lyrics by Ronnie once again "There's a whole in the sky, something evil passing by", "By the fall of the snow, a single soul will go, Footsteps on the white, theres an unholy light", This mystical fabtasy song is what Rainbow was all about. Some excellent guitar work by Ritchie once again and the best drummer ever Cozy Powell provides some more excellent drum work.
3.Starstruck- 10/10 Another Rainbow classic on this album...Rainbow takes a break from the fantasy lyrics for this song and goes to the there and now with a song about a female fan who follows Ritchie everywhere. This has an excellent riff which sounds more like a Deep Purple riff which is still great. Ronnie's vocals are amazing once again. Of course a great guitar solo once again and some great drum work too.
4.Do You Close Your Eyes- 10/10 A great commercial song that sounds like a #1 hit and it sounds like it could have topped the charts in any year from 1970-1990. The riff is excellent as Ritchie uses a complete different sound. This track may come as a suprise after the first 3 and may take some getting used to but It's great and I never skip it anymore. This has some more very powerful vocals from Ronnie with his trademark long note holds. Another thing that makes this song very radio friendly is the length of it since it's only 3:02 long.
5.Stargazer- TOO GOOD TO BE RATED! THIS TO ME IS THE BEST SONG EVER!! Some amazing lyrics by Ronnie! Every verse is amazing! This the best vocal performance ever too! Ronnie's vocals are so powerful that the universe must have briefly collapsed when Ronnie sang this! Maybe that's why he hasn't sang it for a few months too many complaints on that. Anyway the drum intro is incredible aswell and the amazing drumming continues in this slow, powerful, amazing epic. Ritchie's riffs are so powerful too! 2 of the best riff's ever in this song alone! Ritchie Blackmore's guitar solo is one of the best ever and a metal milestone. Amazing bass work too by Bain as Stargazer proves to be a milestone for everyone in the band. The orchestra part of the song adds so much to this song which already would have been the best song ever in my opinion but this song and the orchestra put togethor truly define epic! Every note hold in this song is amazing and all of them are sung in such an impossibly amazing way. No one execpt for Ronnie can sing this song properly either! The fantasy story here is breathtaking too as Ronnie decided to write this song about a wizard who takes people from there homes and makes slaves of them to build a giant tower of stone to the sky and because the wizards always looking at the stars the song is called Stargazer. This is every musician in this amazing band coming togethor and all of there potential coming out in one giant epic song! My only complaints is I wish Blackmore's solo in this studio version was as long as in the live versions and that the song overall was twice as long! Ronnie's singing at the end gets so emotional that it will send chills down your spine and his vocal power is unmatched in this song. This song set the standard for every power metal band ever! This song contains the best vocals ever and best lyrics ever.
6. A Light In The Black- 10/10 Here's Stargazer part 2 as they continue the story this time with the slaves going home and coming to terms with going home. This song is much faster though and once again theres 2 more brilliant riffs from Blackmore. Cozy's drumming is unmatched once again and Jimmy Bain's bass work is incredible. The lyrics once again are incredible. This song is one of the best songs ever and the second best Rainbow song. Ronnie's vocals once again are jaw dropping and it this song has his trademark note holds. Than the solo section is amazing with Tony Carey's blazing keyboard solo. Tony plays so amazing on keyboards that his keyboard solo is as good as something Jon Lord would play! Than Ritchie starts his solo which is one of his best solos ever not to mention of the best guitar solos ever period. He plays very fast and very tastefully throughout his solo and it includes some neo classical lines too! The second half of this song once again proves to have even more emotional vocals than the first half. Play Stargazer and this right through everytime it's amazing. Ronnie, Ritchie, Cozy, Tony and Jimmy once again come togethor and they all peak one this song aswell. The lyrics really reflect that it's the follow up to stargazer. Ronnie's vocal range, power and control on this song is astonishing.
If you don't already have this album than get it NOW! To me and many others it is the best album ever. And don't illegaly download it because these amazing musicians got togethor and put all of this energy into this masterpeice and deserve every cent. Anyway in my opinion this is Ronnie's best work vocally, Ritchie's best work guitar wise, Cozy's best work on the drums, Tony Carey's best work on the keyboards and Jimmy Bain's best work on the bass and that spans a lot of albums. And once again I will state that I think this is the best album ever....the band is
Ronnie James Dio- Vocals
Ritchie Blackmore- Guitar
Cozy Powell- Drums
Tony Carey- Keyboards
Jimmy Bain- Bass
I hope you like this review and hope everyone in the world eventually buys this album

When Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow rocked best! January 16, 2004 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Greetings poetry lovers,It is amazing that this album is not readily available, when far less albums from the era are easily found. This album is a true Rock classic. It takes the power of Deep Purple and blends it with the endless stream of metal mythology from Ronnie James Dio. One warning, if you don't like Ronnie James Dio (and there are those who really don't) then you won't like this. If you do like Dio, this is one of the best line-ups he ever worked with. The late Cozy Powell (Jeff Beck, WhiteSnake, Michael Schenker Group, etc.) provides great percussion on this album. Jimmy Bain does a fine job on bass as does keyboard player Mickey Lee Soule. Many guitar/keyboard sections are reminiscent of the great moments between Ritchie Blackmore and Jon Lord on Deep Purple's Fireball and Who Do We Think We Are. Not only is this album far more progressive than the first Rainbow release, the sound engineering is superior, as well. In fact, the recording quality of this album was as good as it got back then and was only surpassed with the next wave of metal artists such as Ozzy's solo project and Def Leppard (great bottom, clean highs). I had the pleasure of watching his band evolve, having seen three versions of Rainbow live, including the Rainbow Rising tour. It was by far the best of the tours, almost epic in proportion. They had a great stage backdrop of the first album cover (the Fender Stratocaster made to look like a castle) and - as they went into Stargazer - it was replaced by an even larger backdrop of the Rainbow Rising album cover. Along with Ritchie Blackmore's intense theatrical stage presence, the stage set, fog, lights and all made quite an impression. Later versions of Rainbow tended more towards commercial rock - and indeed they had commercial success with that approach (Since You've Been Gone, I Surrender, etc.). I understand that it was Ritchie's decision to move towards commercialism that led to the demise of this version of Rainbow. However, I always think of this line-up when I think of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. So, if you like Deep Purple and Dio, you can't go wrong with this album (if you can find it)! Another review from your friendly neighborhood Dr. Marcus Narley, M.D.
