Product Description Apartment dwellers, go for the ball!
With its convenient, collapsible handle for closet storage, the Dyson DC24 Ball Upright is the lightest and most compact vacuum in Dyson's line-up. This vacuum model is based upon the successful Ball design which allows the head and base off the vacuum to pivot and turn with a twist of the wrist. The design allows the vacuum to easily maneuver around furniture and tight spaces with ease. As such, it is excellent for cleaning all floors with the grace and aplomb of a ballet dancer. It has a lifetime HEPA filter. There are no bags to replace. An extending wand cleans drapes, upholstery, and more.
When and where storage space is prime and closets are already crammed, this 12-pound Dyson offers a collapsible handle. It's an upright that fits into really small spaces.

Check first if you can live with the high-pitched noise July 4, 2009 David J I bought this vac without a demonstration, which was a mistake. The problem was that it produced a loud high-pitched noise in additon to the usual vacuum cleaner sound. Since the noise was unbearable to me, I went back to the store to check if mine was defective. I found that the demo unit (DC24) they displyed also had the same problem. I ended up returning the DC24 and getting a DC27 instead, which was much heavier and bulky but without the painful noise. It is possible that I just experienced two bad samples. But you better demo it before buying this expensive vac.
Dyson DC24 ball vacuum June 30, 2009 Carolyn Maurone I have to admit that I was a big fan of the vacuum that starts with an "O", but now that I went out of the box and got the Dyson, I'm a changed person! WONDERFUL vacuum! Very easy to handle, relatively light in weight, and overall easy to use! And assembly was cake too!
Great vacuum for it's size! June 22, 2009 Erin (Bad Windsheim, Germany) I was amazed at how small this vacuum is, and yet it leaves my old vacuum in the dust (if you'll pardon the pun). I was using a $250 hoover, and for less than double the price I got something half the size and twice the power. It's perfect for my tiny apartment -- no storage space isn't a problem. Investing in a good vacuum is money well spent. A few notes on other reviews I've read: the instructions are not difficult, the hose is not too short, the filters are easy to clean, and assembly is quick and simple. No, it won't go under furniture, but you can buy an extension for that if you need that feature. I'm not sure what the critics were expecting, but I'm fully satisfied.

I purchased this Dyson DC24 almost a year ago, and have been completely satisfied with my purchase. After adopting a black lab puppy last year, and having white tile floors and light colored carpet, I soon realized dragging my old canister vac around every day to clean up dog hair was going to become a REAL drag. I scoured the reviews, and despite some negative comments, I decided to shell out the money (confession: didn't buy from Amazon; got it at Target for $399 with a $40 gift card). While I hesitated to spend so much on a new vacuum when I already had a decent Electrolux, I can now say with conviction that it was well worth the money. After nearly a year of effortless vacuuming EVERY day, it performs in tip-top shape and continues to impress me each and every time I vacuum. It suctions up GOBS of dog hair, and I'm able to simply empty the dirt chamber, whereas I would have spent a small fortune on replacement bags for my Electrolux. Furthermore, I can vacuum my entire 1800 sq ft house in HALF the time it would take with my old canister vac. And this is the best part: vacuuming is now actually FUN because of the Dyson. Navigating it around my house is a breeze... it whips around corners, goes under my dining room table and around chair legs, and easily switches from hard floors to carpet. The ball technology, the dirt chamber, and clever design are all distinct advantages. While some reviewers complain of the short cord, I don't consider this a deficiency. I've never had a vacuum cord reach through the whole house without changing outlets. After a few vacuumings, you just determine which outlets allow you to maximize your work area. My only minor complaint is that I occasionally have to push the on/off button a few times to make it respond, but it may be because I'm not pushing the button squarely in the center. Somewhat annoying, yes, but not enough to warrant returning it or deducting "points". I agree that using the hose wand & brush attachement is a little awkward. Like if you want to vac along a baseboard, you have to tip the vacuum and inevitably bend the hose as you work, but the suction is still there, and it gets the job done. In my opinion, an upright is best suited for floors, period. If your regular vacuuming includes draperies, furniture, your car interior, etc., then a canister vac may be a better choice. But if you've been considering a Dyson, this upright is an efficient, fun-to-use vac with great suction, that's relatively quiet, lightweight, and easy to store. And with its 5 year warranty, you get peace of mind, too. Happy vacuuming!
Dyson DC 24 - Suction roblems after using for 1 week June 18, 2009 D. Lamana (Los Angeles, CA) I read the Consumer Reports review before I bought this machine and thought it sounded like what I need: compact machine with good suction on wood floors and area rugs. I bought the DC 24 on June 4, 2009 and within a week it was having suction problems on large area rugs with low pile. It worked very well on my hardwood floors but on large area rugs - for some reason the ball stopped rolling and the darn thing suctioned to the rug and I could not move the machine forward or back. I had to turn it off and on to get it to release the rug. I phoned Dyson's Helpline and was advised to return it for an exchange - they seemed to think that the machine I bought had a defect in the roller ball. For $399 the DC 24 is kaput after 1 week? I am very disappointed in this machine - mainly because it is GREAT on my hardwood floors but very unreliable on our large area rugs. For all the hype about Dyson vacuums, with this experience, I do not think I will exchange it but will return it for another brand. Hoping to find a good compact machine NOT made in China that will do the job on both hardwood floors and area rugs - should that be so difficult to find? Evidently, yes.
