Harmony who? May 23, 2009 J. Brady (Pittsfield) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm not a teenager or newbie, I'm the owner of many all-in-one type remotes (including several harmonies). I just love this thing, it's intuitive and supereasy to setup and use.
Almost Awesome April 25, 2009 T. Ross (Miami, FL USA) Okay, I received the ESPN Ultimate Remote yesterday and set it up last night. For those of you who fear the remote may be a little too "ESPN-centric", fear not. There are quite a few people who compare this remote to one of the Harmony remotes. Well, I have a Harmony remote and although you can set it up using the PC, it isn't always easy and it doesn't always work the way you'd expect it to. Setting up the ESPN remote can go two ways. If you're not technically inclined, follow the onscreen prompts and it will walk you through the setup. If you have a rather complicated home theater setup, use the learning feature on the remote. "Why would anyone want to use the learning function to program a remote?" Well, I'll tell you: 1. It's fast! In learning mode, you press the button on the new remote (beep), you press the button on the old remote (ding) repeat, repeat, repeat. Once you are in learning mode, you can program buttons one right after another. You don't have to scroll through a menu and select "learn" for each button. You can actually learn a complete device faster with this remote than setting up a Harmony remote using their software. 2. YOU decide what the buttons on the remote do. Okay, on to the good stuff. Guide:The onscreen guide is great. You can scan through it and see what's on tv without having to change the channel or disturbing someone else who's watching tv. If you see something that is coming on later, you can actually set a reminder and the remote will beep when the show is starting. Weather: It will give you the current weather as well as an extended forcast. ESPN: Direct access to ESPN. Click365: Internet access to some news, entertainment, amazon.com, yahoo and even Facebook Mobile. Messaging: Why would you want to send a text message to someone from your remote when you can use your phone? Because you can! Sometimes you just don't feel like getting up to get you phone to text. Well, you can send and receive text messages from your remote control. You can even send someone info about a tv show while looking through the guide directly from the guide. Do you need it? No. Is it kinda cool? Well...yeah Search: There's a search function on the remote. Let's say you're watching a show and refer to something you've never heard of, you can do a search...and presto instant info on that subject. I'm liking this remote more and more as I'm typing this review. For a little over $100 dollars, you can't go wrong with this remote. No, it's not a Harmony. It's better.
Better than expected March 9, 2009 Matthieu Hausig (Brooklyn, NY) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I wasn't expecting a lot from this remote but it definitely impressed. The extra features worked well and the standard remote functions are decent. It is an ideal remote for sports heavy viewing but isn't as mature as other remotes in its class and feels like a first-gen product that could use more polishing. If you mainly watch sports then this is the top choice but home theater types may find better options elsewhere.
Excellent Remote March 5, 2009 D. Hertz (Louisiana) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I think that this remote is great. It was easy to set up and had no problems with finding the codes for all my items. I have a Sony HDTV, Onkyo Receiver, Dish network box, XBOX 360, and DVD player. I am able to control all of these with no problem. It took a little trouble shooting to be able to control the XBOX 360 but after trying some different codes I was able to get it to work. The WiFi support is great, my wife really enjoys the weather forecast. The buttons do take some getting used to and it does have somewhat of a cheap plastic feel to the buttons. The activity and Device buttons are nice to be able to change and access what you want quickly, though the home screen defiantly leaves something to be desired. It's more like a cell phone menu, I would rather have had the activities menu as the home screen. Overall I am very pleased with this remote and happy with the remote experience and would recommend it
Impressive Device December 27, 2008 James K. White (Billings, MT) First of all this unit should not be compared with other remotes unless they too have wi-fi capability. If all you want is a universal remote then spend fewer dollars and get the harmony. If you want a device that you can hold in your hand and provides access to the internet while doubling as a universal remote, then get this device. If you strictly want to compare the remote features to other remotes, then surely it is not the very best, however once you factor in that you have wi-fi capability and the ability to have up-to-date information in the palm of your hand like listings, codes, scores, weather, browsing, etc...then this is clearly the device you should get. As far as build quality goes, it is pretty good. Nice screen, nice joystick control, nice layout, nice backlight, nice battery, overall nice, could be better yes, but certainly acceptable. It took me less than an hour to set-up 12 devices, I was looking around for more things to control I had not planned on using it for just because it was so easy. I too have had lock-up issues but only when I decided to play with it by searching for open networks and using it as a text device outside the home (free texting). I think its fun to play with while watching tv. Another neat thing, download the latest headline news then read them outside the house, connect to open networks and use the messaging to text for free. No data charges like a cell plan. Think outside the box with this device, it is much more than a simple universal remote, and therefore in my opinion is the "ultimate remote." If they could just get the retrieve a beer function working they would really have something special.
