3 out of 5 stars It's...different...   March 18, 2010

I feel as if I have to write a review for this game seeing as how I've beaten every numbered FF game, even played FFXI online for a few years, I did skip X-2 however...
In saying all of that, this game certainly is different...
First of all it is fairly linear for the first 20 hours or so. I mean linear in the sense that there is a hallway and you run down it and fight monsters along the way. Gone is the time where you have a world map in which you can roam and battle while building your characters up. Instead you have just a few small groups of monsters to fight and kill then run around and wait for them to respawn. The battle system is different as well because now you only control one character and if that person dies because your fellow AI heal someone else with lower hp then game over. This happens too often but there is a retry option after you die which puts you back right before you started the fight so you can regroup and try again. Gone are the battles where you can control an entire team and rely on eachother to overcome the monsters. Paradigms allow you to switch up job systems on the fly but too many times it's too little too late.
Also new is the star rating system after you win a battle. It is reliant on how fast you finish the fights which to me is utter crap. Why can't I take my time and build up a strategy facing a huge boss without having to worry about time constraints for a guitar hero like ranking?
The characters are well developed and the story is a little foggy for awhile until you understand all the names i.e. falcie, ilcie etc. Annoying teenage characters, big macho hero type, stern soldier, silly older guy are all a little cliche but still work well with an interesting story.
The music is good at times but then is replaced with wretched "music" that sounds like rejects from dance dance revolution.
I had to play this and I will go through with completing this game because I have been playing FF for years. All in all I'm still enjoying playing and am at a point where I can roam finally after almost 30 hours of linear maps.

4 out of 5 stars I was on the fence about buying this...   March 18, 2010

I debated purchasing this game altogether due to my disappointment with FF12. I kept reading reviews that the game was very linear and different. Well, it is but it's not bad. God of War is linear but people still adore the games for their story and just being plain fun. I wouldn't call FF13 a straight up RPG. In my opinion, it is an action, light RPG, and strategy game all rolled into one, so far. My rational for this is that the story itself is RPG-ish. The game play itself is more like an "action" game rather than an open RPG setting. The battle system is very strategic as you are offered many different options during battle. The battle system has been the most fun aspect of the game for me thus far.

My thoughts related to the game so far are that the story is a bit confusing at first but slowly becomes clear as time goes on. The voice acting is annoying to me. I just don't understand how a giant title such as Final Fantasy could have such mediocre voice acting. GoW, Half-Life 2, Uncharted, and countless other games have great voice acting. It's not a game destroying flaw, just obnoxious at times.

There is a LOT of cut scenes so far. I'm roughly 9 hours into the game and agree with others that the amount of cut scenes makes it feel less like a game at times and more like a movie, at times, not always.

Graphics: Great on the PS3 and great on the Xbox. Fan boys will be fan boys but the level of detail on both systems is pure eye candy regardless of which is technically better. I have both a PS3 and an XBOX and purely bought it for the XBOX for the gamer score and XBOX Live.

Music: Acceptable. It is clear that Nobuo Uematsu didn't bless this game with his talents. The music to me is forgettable but not intrusive or obnoxious. Gamers who enjoyed Nobuo's past work will almost definitely notice the difference. Purely opinion though.

Characters: Cool for the most part. Vanille and Hope get on my nerves but that is mostly due to their voice acting and some cheesy dialogue.

As I said, the game so far is very linear but still fun. The environments are detailed and straight forward. No secret islands with Knights of the Round, etc. (So far).

My favorite aspect of the game is the battle system. It is extremely flexible and unlike any other FF. There is no mana to worry about, which is actually a nice change, in my opinion. The paradigm shift idea is fun and effective. I like that you have the option to execute a command as soon as you have the ATB to do so. You are not bound to wait until the entire ATB meter fills up; this rules for fights where you just need one more shot.

The Crystarium system is also pretty cool. It is considerably better than the FF10 sphere grid of doom. It is very straight forward and so far hasn't required tons of fighting to max out.

Is FF13 the best game ever? Not in my opinion.
Is FF13 like FF12? No.
Is FF13 fun? So far, very.
Is FF13 worth the money? Yes.
Should Square remake FF7? Yes :0) (yes, i've been a fanboy since 7th grade)

After only nine hours, a lot of apprehension, and an open mind I can say I am truly enjoying this game and do not regret getting it. I hope this helps with other people who are debating and just cannot decide. My advice, if you have the cash to spare, go for it!

5 out of 5 stars This is a story based rpg.   March 18, 2010

Many people are saying that this rpg is very linear. Think about the reviews of final fantasy 10. people loved it but that game was very linear as well ( which is not a bad thing). BUT back then we didint have oblivion and mass effect. Western rpgs were not as big on consoles so its understandable why people are upset. Western RPGS raised the bar for jrpgs in some asspects. But(also) the linear focus adds more to the apeal to the story. The story is awsome and you just want to get to the next point to find out what hapends next. Its not a GROUND breaking game but its still a good game. In terms of battle sytem, its genius. The AI is very good and knows exactley what there doing. The paragon ( I can't spell for crap) is a fun system where instead of having FIGHTER/BLACK MAGE/WHITE MAGE in the classic games where the white mage cant really do anything because the battle is easy, you have in the game FIGHTER/BLCK/BLCK makes the fights a whole lot fatser and more fun. But if your need to heal bring out a different round of jobs with the click of a button EX: FIGHTER/TANK/ HEAL. My point is its a great battle system were your can kick the crap out of enimies real fast and real hard and still have a healer on back with only 3(!!!) peaple in the party at one time. I have not played the ps3 version, but i have done research and found the difference is the graphics and a slight differnce at that. This game should not be a reason to go out and spend 370 dollars to play if you already have the 360. Im not at all bashing the ps3. if i had the time i would own both. On the ps3 side if you have the ps3 and 360 i would get for the ps3 first and then 360 when its cheaper (for the GAMERSCORE) The content of each game I read is the same. These are some of the points I wanted to bring out based on some of the amazon reviews. If it wasnt good please say so for this is my first reveiw. If you have any questions please contact me.

3 out of 5 stars Yeah I agree... getting boring...   March 18, 2010

Why does Square keep doing this? If anything, the last good Final Fantasy was the tenth one. Of course, the best one was 7 without a doubt. The rest that came were good but not as good (except for 9, which had good graphics but horrible gameplay IMO). Then with X2, XI, and XII, they started to go downhill. Then the FF7 spinoffs came. I enjoyed Advent Children even though the plot was a bit fanfic-ish, but hated Dirge and thought they blew it big time with Crisis Core. That said, I still had hope for thirteen.

I am but 7 hours in and so far this is undoubtedly better than Crisis Core, and I'll admit that. But that said, it's still style over content, like the past three games.

PROS:
-The graphics are good
-Good music from Uematsu as usual
-The cutscenes don't go on for too long
-The character development is more apparent.

CONS:
-The plot is REALLY rushed, really unoriginal and if anything, a bit too linear. It's like the writers thought that they could just write a Twilight fanfic for a thirteenth entry and it would still be FF. This plot would have been good for a Halo game, not for a Final Fantasy.

-The battle system is unfortunately in Crisis Core mode again. It's all a bit too automated; you just smash the A button several times and it does all the work for you. Furthermore, what REALLY ticks me off is that you can't choose your party member's attacks like you could previously, so therefore if your character dies, well, he/she dies.

-The dialogue is REALLY awful!!! I know that video game dialogue is not the best but with how long it took for this, you'd think they'd write compelling dialog.

-This is no RPG game. The leveling up is gone, money is almost worthless and sometimes you have to make unfair decisions.

-Also, I really hate the protagonist Lightning so far. He is really annoying and whiny.

I haven't beaten it yet, in fact I am close to it, but so far, I'm starting to lose my faith in the FF series. If FFXIV is like this, then the series is pretty much done and over. This isn't a bad game, but beware. It's definitely no FF game.

3 out of 5 stars Average is not Final Fantasy   March 18, 2010

I have played Final Fantasy since the first one came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System all those years ago. Yes the one that took cartridges and only worked with 8 bits and Mario and his brother was so popular they added super in front of there names. Final Fantasy was a epic game then when it came as well as each that followed. Sure, there was Mystic Quest, and Crystal Cronicles that were just so-so but for the main game and the main story of the game Square never went short of all out making sure the game left all others behind... until now that is.

The story is nice and and you can advance past much more of it than you could before. I really enjoy this. Past versions was for not wanting to wait 10 min just to hear Edge (I believe was his name in FF2 to say "Mom, Dad, I love you" or Cloud go on about why he was such a loser in FF7) but here it was bad dialog. What happand? You have have a great deep story that just is ruined by cheap and out right lousy dialog. This is bad even for a cheap show and everyone knows Square can do a fantastic job, if not the best in the industry. For some reason its hard to take any of the characters seriously listening to what they say.Which is a real shame as FF has always been heavy centered around the characters. Its worth bearing through the first time as the story is very good as always.

For game play i find the game average here. I like customization and though yu can do a bit here not as much as I would of liked. I guess that's why FF1 was always my favorite of all of them, though 8 was good to) The game does nothing wrong here its solid and the battles are nice, just not mind blowing. Final Fantasy needs to be mind blowing not average! Some will like the ability to switch jobs in mid battle, but I have never cared for this myself. I like to find a set up I like and have it there for good or ill and seems more real to me. This is a personal preference of course so decide for your self.

Graphics. This is true classic Final Fantasy! The graphics are amazing and the characters, spells and summons are very detailed. It is obvious Square has pushed the limits of the 360 system (and I assume the PS3). This is a hallmark of the series and I was glad to see it did not suffer. If you like pretty pictures you will love this game for graphics alone.

So whats my final review of this game? I give it a 8/10. There is alot to like here! it may sounds like I was really criticizing the game in parts I said before, and well... I was sort of. It's like this. If this was a game brought out by some unknown company just making its way into the field it would be different the game is really good. But Final Fantasy has had a long standing for not being just good or average but exceptional. and it falls short here. Get the game, you will enjoy it. Just not to the scale you might of thought you would.
