Amazon.com Review
If you'd like to send and receive e-mail but don't want to bother learning about or paying for a computer, the MailBug may be perfect for you. With the MailBug, checking your e-mail is a easy as pressing a single button.

To set up the MailBug, we connected the AC power and plugged in the telephone line cord. The MailBug's screen came to life and instructed us to press a button so that it could call a toll-free number to set the date and time. After setting the time, the MailBug informed us that we had new e-mail. Without checking the manual, we intuitively determined how to view, read, reply to, and later compose e-mail. (When you receive your MailBug, you must obtain an e-mail address and sign up for Landel Telecom's proprietary e-mail/Internet service by calling the customer support number included in the box. For more information, click on the FAQ in the left navigation bar, and see the question that asks "How does the MailBug e-mail service work?" Note that our test unit was preprogrammed with an e-mail address.)

The MailBug has 61 main keys, 8 function keys above the main keyboard, and 12 menu buttons next to the LCD screen. Typing on the full-size keyboard is fast and easy. The Shift keys and functions keys are conveniently placed and all the keys were responsive and comfortable as we typed our messages.

While browsing the onscreen menus, we discovered the Services function, which let us view headline news and look up stock quotes. We also located the built-in phone book, which allowed us to create and save names and phone numbers. The entire process was straightforward and intuitive.

Additional features include an e-mail address book and caller ID with a 100-call history and automatic "display and dial." A status LED blinks rapidly to indicate that the phone is ringing and blinks slowly to indicate new caller-ID calls or voice-mail messages. (A subscription to caller ID and voice mail is optional through your phone company.) The documentation, which is easy for novice users to understand, completely explains how to compose, send, receive, and manage e-mail.

If you don't want a PC but you do want to send and receive e-mail, the MailBug from Landel Telecom is an easy-to-use alternative.

Pros:

  • Very easy to set up and use
  • Comfortable keyboard for fast typing
  • Requires no computer skills

Cons:

  • Does not accept e-mail attachments
  • Requires monthly subscription fee

Because I am deaf and unable to use the telephone all my communication with my children is done by email I needed an alternate mail method for times that the internet is down or having atemper tamtrum. The Mailbug fits the bill admirably. I can't say enough about it.

4 out of 5 stars For elderly mom   February 4, 2009

Mailbug is for my 86 yr old mom. It works for her because you have to push 3 buttons with the words written on a screen below to view email. Her unsteady fingers can still work it to read my emails from out of the country. It is best to write 2 short emails to keep from having to scroll too far (just an up and a down button). The viewing screen is small; but works! I did not have time to tutor her on sending email...a little harder than reading..Will catch that next time.

1 tiny problem was getting the 'set up' phone number to answer. I had to call several times and let it ring. However, the representative was veyr nice.

5 out of 5 stars My Mother-in-law loves it!   January 10, 2009

We bought this mailbug for my mother-in-law to replace the mailstation she had. As of Oct. 2008, she is 81 years old. The reason we purchased the mailbug is that she used the mailstation so much that she wore the letters off the keys. The mailbug has a better keyboard. She uses the mailbug daily, many times through the day. The LCD screen is more readable than the mailstation. For us, there has not been a drawback in making this purchase. There was no down time for her to learn how to use it. The same day she set up the mailbug with her email address she was off emailing her daily group of friends and relatives. She loves the mailbug.

I ordered this for my 82 year old mother who had previously been using a mailstation that quit connecting and for which 7 calls to a customer service group based in India was of no help. The box arrived with this machine in it. I had it out of the box, hooked up and working within 10 minutes, including the time to open the box. I sent up the address book for my mom and within minutes of that, she had sent her first emails from the mailbug. The keyboard is also a very nice one and the visual display is easy to read. The customer service group, who I had to call to activate the account, is in the US and were helpful and very easy to deal with. Its a wonderful option for someone who wants email but doesn't really want to learn how to use a computer.

This is a great way for a senior citizen to communicate with her family when away. Love it.
