5 out of 5 stars First-class laptop (17-inch) travel case   March 14, 2010
Cary Champlin (Seattle)
When I purchased a 17-inch laptop computer last year, I discovered that my smaller 5-year-old well-traveled Targus laptop case, was too small.

For the new laptop case, I was looking for the basic features: Protect my laptop, Space for accessories (power, cables, mini-mouse, i-touch, ear buds, headphones), Externally accessible front pocket for travel-related paperwork, Room for a couple of books, Wide carrying strap/handle, easy to process through airport security as a carry-on, and looks professional.

So, what makes the 'Targus CityGear Miami Messenger Case' the 17-inch laptop travel case to own?

Space for Accessories: For a 17-inch laptop case, it is reasonably sized (5-inch depth) to include accessories yet avoids being the laptop travel case equivalent of an SUV. There are several small pockets (both zippered mesh and velcro flap). Two of the mesh pockets are especially convenient for USB drives, iTouch/pod, ear buds. The larger velcro flap pockets easily store power adapters/cords and other items such as a mini-mouse, cables. Note: The picture shows a maximally loaded travel case; something I rarely do.

Front Pocket: For quick access to important travel-related paperwork, the zippered pocket on the front flap satisfies. The pocket is large enough to include 8.5x11 inch material. However, a standard manilla folder is too large to fit in this pocket.

Room for Books: Next to the padded laptop compartment is another full-length/width compartment for large flat items such as manilla folders, reports, books. With a maximum compartment depth of about 2 inches, there are some sizing restrictions (place books side-by-side instead of stacking).

Overall, I like using this 17-inch Targus laptop travel case and recommend it highly. Safe travels ...

5 out of 5 stars This is cool!   March 11, 2010

Very nicely designed, and has plenty of space for note books, or other books. And a mouse and head set and power adapter, and even a water bottle!

The only problem is, if you put a lot of stuff in it, it gets heavy. : )

5 out of 5 stars Sturdy, Stylish & Roomy   March 7, 2010

The Targus City Gear Backpack was the perfect replacement to my Dell backpack. This one was about the same size as my original, but with what seems to be twice the storage room. Perfect to hold all of my file folders, notebooks, laptop, cords, peripherals, AND my IPOD.... I am definitely happy with this decision.

4 out of 5 stars Good Case For Reasonable Money   February 20, 2010

Bought this case recently and quite happy with size, finish and functionality. There are probably better cases around, but not many for this money. Really recommend this for anyone on budget.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for school   February 19, 2010

Perfect bag for uni. And even though it's for 15.4 notebooks, this bag is BEST for 11.6! sure, it'll fit a 15 just fine, but an 11.6 you can fit sideways and have plenty of room for other things you'd like to give the protection of extra foam to.

In this bag I can fit all these thing:

My notebook and power cord
2 large text books
a 1 inch binder
a sigg lunch box
pen, pencil, high lighter
my gameboy
graphing calculator
purrell
slim portable HHD
my phone
my keys
and my camera (in the side pouch lovingly line with a soft material that seems tailor made for camera storage)
my gloves and mask (winter time bike riding to class. will replace in the spring with a rain poncho and fly for the bag)
my water bottle

Yep!! Sure, you can get the next size up (the XL or 17 in city gear) but do you need more space than this?? This is almost unfashionable with it's size, but just barely not (if you're 6ft like me, it appears large on MY back). And for all it's size, the XL uses lighter gauge nylon. This Citygear Chicago bag is NOT going to rip anytime soon, and it's packed.

complaints: I'm not without one or two small complaints. The design is OLD. so old, they give you room for CD's and a CD player. this needs updating for modern devices. few people use portable CD players anymore and just as few use the optical media drive on their comps. The oldness of the design also leave a lot to be desired in the form of strap padding. I mean, it's functional, but every other targus bag looks cooler, this one looks plain boring.

Finally, you never know when you might have to set the bag down, and on snowy days with my computer in tote, I hate looking around for a dry spot to rest it. I think for the money, targus could have gone the extra mile and just replaced the bottom cloth with a rubberized weatherproof bit. It doesn't need to be waterproof all over, but at least the bottom, where conceivably it can get wet even when it's not raining or snowing. It have been nice of them.

still, fantastic purchase.
