3 out of 5 stars Ron Carter Shines   May 16, 2007
David Zehring (La Veta, CO United States)

Christian McBride names Ron Carter as one of the four greatest bassists in jazz (the others are Ray Brown, Paul Chambers and Jaco Pastorius), and this DVD is a opportunity to see why he makes that list. His playing is stunning throughout, whether supporting Herbie or soloing. Herbie plays at his usual very high level, voicing chords as only he can, interacting constantly with Ron Carter. The disappointment here is Billy Cobham. As a fellow drummer, I have always admired Billy's unique approach to the instrument, and his contribution to the music of the Mahavishnu Orchestra was extraordinary, but he doesn't really serve the music of this trio well. I was looking for a performance that dug into the compositions, and I was hoping to see and hear true collaborative improvisation, but Billy seems to be outside the trio, not truly within. He dazzles, to be sure, but he doesn't meld. If you're a big fan of any of these players, check out this DVD, but if you're looking for ensemble improvisation, look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing retread of a GREAT Concert, keep reading...   April 25, 2007
Daniel Garcia (Missouri)
I bought this thinking that I was expanding my Herbie Hancock video library. Sorry to say that this DVD is a rip off of the Herbie Hancock Trio, "Hurricane" -- same concert, different package! I already had a VHS copy of "Hurricane." I guess the bright side is that I can view this on my laptop's DVD player wherever I go, not that I use it a whole lot. JUST BE WARNED, THOSE OF YOU WHO ALREADY HAVE "HURRICANE." Those of you who don't have this concert video should get it, so you have two releases to choose from.

5 out of 5 stars High Velocity Virtuosity   March 15, 2007
B. Vercher (Baton Rouge, LA)
In the 1960's, Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter, along with Tony Williams, had already proven themselves to be a fearsome force in the world of jazz, whether in groups led by Hancock or such greats as Miles Davis. Here, Hancock and Carter reunite with hurricane-force drummer Billy Cobham for one of the most stunning displays of virtuosity and musicality ever captured on film. All 3 men are in blazing form here, each turning in some of their most memorable performances. Though Hancock is the leader of the trio, he and Carter seem to be entranced by Cobham, whose spitfire rhythms propel his bandmates to the limits of their imaginations.

But, I must say that I have given this DVD a 5 star rating as a compromise. The picture/audio synch tends to fall off by a second or two here and there, detracting somewhat from the feeling of "seeing" the music as it is played. This happens maybe 2 to 4 times and usually lasts roughly 30 seconds before whoever edited the footage corrected the tracking. For that reason I was going to give this package 4 stars, but I ultimately decided the material itself was worth at least 6 stars, so I've settled on 5 as a happy median.

So... why are you still reading this? BUY THIS DVD!!
